Ergonomic Design

Ergonomics is a branch of science which focuses mainly on physiology, psychology and engineering studies. An ergonomic design is a human focused plan with great attention to usability. It makes sure that the restrictions and disabilities of users are respectively met by the design options.

The huge production of various services does not take into consideration the anatomical dimensions of users. The fraction of a particular chair that is made to fit a six foot tall person will not go well with a small sized person. If there is a mass production of such products, the commonly used products will be difficult to use. While making a particular product, it is essential to consider the size and shape of products and the way they suit the needs of the user. This is the basic theory of ergonomic design. A seven year old female girl might find it difficult to open a can with a can opener even when the same procedure might be very easy for a twenty year old male.

While making a particular product, it is important to know the intentions and target audience behind its production. This is vital in the achievement of ergonomic design goal. If the ergonomics is quality oriented, it will make sure that technology strikes a perfect balance with human use. Thus it makes a rapid decrease in the risk of injury and mistakes. If the human requirements are met with technology, it will bring about greater precision and efficiency. One will be able to improve the quality of life by wisely making use of the theories of ergonomic design.

The employees will not be able to work in a comfortable environment if the glare from the computer screen and poor quality lighting cause distractions. If the lighting is not as per the rules of ergonomic design, it will result in eye and neck pain and reduce the productivity and working hours of a particular staff. If the lighting is ergonomically correct, it will make the job of the staff quite easy. They will not suffer from neck and eye pain which will result in better performance and efficiency.

The essentiality of ergonomic design was given prominence from the days of Second World War. The authorities began to think that the armed forces and security will be more effective if the ergonomic requirements of a particular soldier are taken into consideration. Once the authorities began to give more importance to ergonomic changes, the efficiency of the security forces also improved. At present, authorities, manufacturers and business firms have started giving due importance to ergonomic design.
